Bristol –
The Lido
Tucked away in a courtyard
of Georgian terraces in the
suburb of Clifton, The Lido
is among the UK’s oldest
outdoor pools. But you’ll find
more to do than just swim
because you’re surrounded by an award-
winning restaurant, tapas bar and spa.
The spa provides tailor-made massages
using bespoke own-brand Lido oils. So
whether you’re looking for deep relaxation,
or a blissful facial, you’re well taken care of.
If you fancy a bite to eat, the restaurant is
situated in the old viewing gallery, where
diners have fine views of the pool through
floor-to-ceiling windows.

Dating back to 1849, having been
closed since 1990, the Lido has been
restored to its former glory. Issued with
a Grade-II listing by English Heritage, it
reopened in 2008 and the pool is heated
and allows all-year swimming. It’s become
a venue for daily swims and celebrations.

mark George V’s Silver Jubilee. Like many
lidos, it had become dilapidated by the
early 1990s, but thanks to the efforts
of local supporters, grant funding was
secured and it reopened in 1994.
Although it’s cleverly designed to cope
with the full ferocity of the Cornish seas,
storms in February 2014 caused damage.
After repairs, it was
reopened by Prince
Charles and is now
an integral part of
this town’s appeal.

Stonehaven,
aberdeenshire
In the harbour town of Stonehaven, just
south of Aberdeen, this Olympic-sized
lido offers everything from quiet swims to
midnight sessions beneath the stars. And
it has a cafe and free parking.
The 1980s and 1990s saw a decline in
visitors and the pool was threatened
with closure, prompting the founding of
a community group, who lobbied for its
survival. Today, the pool, using water
taken from the North Sea before being
filtered, treated and heated to 29°C
(84°F) is the focal point of Stonehaven.
