Say “welcome”
with a blooming box

A hibiscus tree boasts eye-catching interest, says Myers.
Plus, she notes, “Hummingbirds love hibiscus, so try placing
the plant near a seating area where you can watch for the tiny
visitors.” To create this display, pick up a hibiscus topiary at a
garden center and plant geranium and ivy into the soil around
the topiary’s base to soften the edge of the container. Place
in an area that gets full sun to partial shade and water when
the top few inches of soil feel dry. Deadhead as needed.

“The wild look of mandevilla plants, with
their glossy leaves, colorful flowers and
bushy growth, is uplifting,” Myers says.
Mandevilla plants are one of her favor-
ites because they’re so tough: They’re
drought- and heat-tolerant, and they
bloom all season. And planting them in
a green container that blends in with the
foliage makes the display appear fuller
and allows the bright blooms to really
pop. Myers suggests watering mandev-
illa plants when the top inch or two of
soil feels dry and placing them in a spot
that gets full or partial sun.
