Top Five Tips for Keeping Fit in Your 50s

W

hile 36% of people aged 55 and
over are physically inactive, the
nation’s ageing population is expected
to reach 20 million by 2030. Yet, those
who participate in minimal physical
activity stand to benefit the most in terms
of their health and wellbeing.
Step forward Anytime Prime, an
exclusive new membership for over 55s
facilitated by leading UK health club
provider Anytime Fitness. The
membership, available at a number of
Anytime Fitness’ 160+ UK clubs, provides
unique benefits to support over 55s
achieve their fitness goals and lead
healthy and social lives.
Marvin Burton, Anytime Fitness’ Head
of Fitness, has come up with his ‘top five
tips for keeping fit in your 50s’ and how
Anytime Prime can help you on your way
to achieving your goals.
Here are Marvin’s simple suggestions:

INCLUDE RESISTANCE
TRAINING IN YOUR WORKOUT
Incorporating resistance training into
your workout strengthens bones and
helps to improve your stability and
posture. As we age it is important to
keep our bones, muscles and joints
strong to ensure we stay mobile, prevent
injury and defend against physical
conditions such as osteoporosis.
Resistance training exercises can be
completed by using gym equipment
including weight machines, kettlebells
or medicine balls.

STAY FUNCTIONAL
In daily life we are faced with a
variety of tasks such as bending, lifting,
reaching, pushing, twisting and pulling.
These movements tend to improve by
taking part in a multitude of activities
that focus on directional change and
awareness to such fundamental skills.

EAT HEALTHY FOOD
Focusing on your gym programme
is important but following this with
a good nutritional plan is vital. Anytime
Prime personal trainers offer suggestions
and advice that can help to decrease
inflammation, improve digestion
and aid your workout recovery
quicker. Making sensible changes
to your nutrition will improve your
digestion, balance hormones and
improve sleep.

VARY YOUR INTENSITY
The gym isn’t just about working
hard! Anytime Prime recognises that
exercise should have varying degrees of
intensity. Your body responds well to high
intensity work but being able to control
movement, improve at your own personal
rate and use the correct technique is far
more important. We focus on the quality
of exercise, not the quantity.

ENJOY YOUR WORKOUT
Exercise releases a ‘feel good’
hormone called endorphins. As you
become more familiar with the gym and
exercise, you will begin to find
satisfaction and reward in your fitness
routine. Along with this, we encourage a
community-based atmosphere at all
Anytime Fitness locations and offer
support, group exercise and even
refreshments after your workout.
Anytime Prime is available across the
UK and its benefits include tailored
low-impact ‘Prime’ group exercises
classes which focus on balance and
flexibility, dedicated ‘Prime’ focussed
personal trainers for specific training and
support, social activities for ‘Prime’
members during off-peak hours* and
local partnerships that support the local
community.
Overwhelmingly known for its
convenience, Anytime Fitness has
recently changed its brand positioning
from convenience to coaching. Anytime
Prime is one of many developments that
showcases the brand’s dedication to
coaching and supporting its members, in

addition to a facility which they can use
around their busy lifestyle.
It also offers a unique ‘join one, join all’
membership, allowing access to all UK
clubs and over 4,500 clubs worldwide.
