rendersituselessasameansof
transport.Whenstartedfromcold,it
willrunforalmostexactly 20 minutes,
thencutoutandrefusetorestartfor
acoupleofhoursuntilithastotally
cooleddown.Theprocessthenrepeats.
Iwastoldthatthesecarsfrequently
sufferfromcrankshaft-positionsensor
faults,sowasverypleasedwhenI
foundthesensortobephysically
damaged.Iwassomewhatlesspleased
whenitsreplacementmadeno
differenceatalltotheproblem.
Ihavealsoeliminatedtheamplifiers
bysubstitution.Anyideas?

Whoeveradvisedthepotential
crank-sensormaladywas
probablyontherighttrack,but
failedtomentionthattheseMarelli-
ignitedcarsemploytwosensors.
Thefrontone(thatweassume
youreplaced)isconventionally
mountedadjacenttothecrankshaft
damper.Itspartnerisfoundatthe
lowerrearoftheengine,attached
tothealuminiumtorqueconvertor
undershield,takingitssignalfrom
thedriveplate.Thesesensorsare
currentlywidelyavailable,under
partnumberDBC12508,foraround
£40,makingitssubstitutionan
economicmove.
Intheunlikelyeventthatthisdoes
notsolvetheproblem,turnyour
attentiontowardsthefuelpump,
whichmaybefailingwhenwarm.
However,thisisusuallyaccompanied
byaroughwhiningnoise,whichyou
shouldeasilybeabletohear.

tore-programitforasofterride.
Secondly,roadnoise:Irunnewtyres
(MichelinAcoustic,255/35and285/30)
on20inNevisrims.Theroadnoiseat
normalhighwayspeedsisdisturbingly
prominent.IhadContinentalContiSport
Contacttyresbefore,andtheywere
louderstill.BeingaluxuryGT,Ibelieve
theroadnoiseshouldnotbeworsethan
onamid-rangesaloon,forexamplea
VWPassat.
Anyadviceyoucanprovidewillbe
highlyappreciatedandservetomakea
greatcarevenbetter.
