ROOT OF THE TROUBLES
In mid-August 1969, political and sectarian tensions in
Northern Ireland flared up into full-scale violence – a key early
episode in the three decades of unrest known as ‘the Troubles.’
A new five-part BBC Radio 4 series presented by Ruth
Sanderson revisits these events through her own family’s story
and dramatised eyewitness testimonies to explore what really
happened during this pivotal event in the province’s history.

THE QUEST FOR JUSTICE
The 1989 Central Park jogger case,
which followed the assault and rape of
a woman in that New York park, has
been the subject of films before, most
notably Ken Burns’ 2012 documentary.
Now, a new dramatisation from Selma
director Ava DuVernay is making global
headlines. Available to stream on
Netflix, When They See Us follows the
stories of five young Hispanic-American
and African-American men who were
convicted of the attack despite the
absence of DNA and physical evidence,
and who received prison sentences
of up to 15 years – sentences that were
rescinded only in 2002.
The four-part series features a cast
including Moonlight’s Jharrel Jerome
and Michael K Williams, star of
The Wire. It’s been praised for its focus
on the emotional fallout of the case
for the ‘Central Park Five’ and their
families, and for the themes of justice
and prejudice that pervade the story.

‘PICTURES
RUN RIOT’
That’s one literal translation of
characters for the Japanese word manga
- and it goes some way to conveying
the visual focus and intense creativity
of the graphic novels it describes.
Although the form we now recognise
emerged in the 1920s, its roots stretch
back even further, to artworks such as
the woodblock print of a spectral
apparition (above) from Japanese artist
Hokusai’s 1833 series One Hundred
Ghost Tales. A new British Museum
exhibition – the largest on the oeuvre
ever mounted outside Japan – offers a
fascinating primer to an art form that
has become a global phenomenon.
