wasinnosmallmeasuretheworkoflong-establishedrepublicanfamilies—
aswellasoftheirassociates,likeOvidiusNaso.
TheTabulaSiarensisalsotakesusbacktothepubliccelebrationofAugus-
tus,andalmostcertainlytotheyearafterhisdeath.Foritrecordsthatthe
arch(‘‘ianus’’)whichwastobeerectedintheCircusFlaminiuswastogoon
thespotwherestatueshadalreadybeendedicatedtoDivusAugustusandthe
DomusAugustabyGaiusNorbanusFlaccus.Theoccasionisverylikelyto
havebeenFlaccus’consulateasordinariusin...Ifso,thecombinationof
attentiontotherecentlydeifiedAugustusandtothewiderimperialhouse
findsaclosereflectionbothinOvid’spoetryandinanotherkeyinscription
ofthesameperiod.^18

fulfillablehopesontheotherisalsomatchedintwootherliteraryworksof
theperiod,whichneedtobementionedbrieflybeforeweturntothelater
worksofOvid.
