Scots able to sneak in one last race before finals

Some of the finest winter
weather of the season waited
for March to arrive.
That’s too bad for the
Caledonia and Plainwell/
Thornapple Kellogg varsity
ski teams.
“I filed a waiver to hold the
race next Wednesday, but was
denied by the MHSAA,”
Caledonia varsity ski coach
Duane Petrosky said after his
team manged to get in at
late-season Caledonia
Invitational at Crystal Mountain
in Thompsonville Feb. 24. “I
guess it has to be approved by
the Representative Council and
they do not meet again until the
end of March. It was a tough
season for most of our teams
due to the weather, I am glad we
travel north as much as we do.”
Thornapple Kellogg senior
Lucy VanDemark, skiing one
last time for the Plainwell/TK
Trojan Ski co-op earned second
team all-state honors with her
11th-place slalom finish at the
MHSAA Division 2 Ski Finals
at Boyne Mountain Feb. 27.
Her team got to get one
more race in with the Fighting
Scots at Crystal Mountain
there between regionals and

the state finals.
Coach Petrosky expects the
late-season Caledonia
Invitational to become a year-
ly tradition.
“The weather at home has
just not cooperated, we have
only been able to hold two
conference races and I wanted
more for my skiers so I looked

into moving our final confer-
ence race to Crystal Mountain,
but there were scheduling con-
flicts with most of the teams in
the Southwest Michigan Ski
Conference,” Petrosky said.
“At that point, I decided to
book the race and invite a
group of teams that we race
against during the season.
Plainwell/TK was the only
conference school that could
make the date work and we
were excited to introduce them
