This necklace comprises an axe-like
knot and a ram’s head knot which,
when combined, denote good luck. Fold a
cord through a piece of jade and tie a clover-
leaf knot (1) followed by a winged pan chang
knot (4). Extend the outer loops on each side
of the winged structure into a cloverleaf
knot (2, 3) followed by a double connection
knot (5). Separate the two cord ends and tie
each into a cloverleaf knot with two outer
loops (6, 7). In between knots 6 and 7, tie
another cloverleaf knot (8) using the tying
technique of the last cloverleaf knot within
the ru yiknot. Tie knots (9–12) in exactly the
same way as knots 5–8. Remember to hook
up the adjoining outer loops of the top and
bottom cloverleaf knots. Tie a double connec-
tion knot (13) at the top. Leave enough cord
for the necklace loop, then tie another double
connection knot (14). Tie each cord end into a
cloverleaf knot (15, 16) and bind with thread.
Finally, insert beads in the outer loops of
cloverleaf knots 15 and 16.

43

Fold a cord and tie each end into
a cloverleaf knot (not shown). Leave
enough length for the necklace loop. Bring
the cord ends together and tie a good luck
knot with six outer loops (3). Extend the
middle outer loops on each side of the
good luck knot into a cloverleaf knot (1, 2).
Bring the cord ends together at the bottom
of the good luck knot and tie them into a
button knot (4). Pull the cord ends through
the loop of a porcelain medallion (or other
suitable ornament), fold them back and
and sew them onto the body of the button
knot. Finally, sew a bead in the center of
the good luck knot.

44

Fold a cord and tie a hui lingknot (1)
followed by a round brocade knot
with ten outer loops (4). Extend the middle
outer loop on each side into a cloverleaf knot
(2, 3). After completing the round brocade
knot, bring the cord ends together and tie a
button knot (5). Fold another cord and sew it
onto the button knot to make a double-layer
necklace loop. Decorate the loop with gold
threads at suitable distances. Finally, sew a
gold medallion onto the hui lingknot.

45

Pull a cord through the top of the
pendant, fold it and tie a double
connection knot (1). Separate the cord
ends and tie the right cord end into two
consecutive cloverleaf knots (2, 3), leaving
a suitable distance between them. Do the
same with the left cord end (4, 5). Bring
the cord ends together and tie a good luck
knot with four outer loops (6). Extend each
outer loop of the good luck knot into the
adjacent cloverleaf knots. Leave enough
cord for the necklace loop, then tie a button
knot. Finally, make a good luck tassel (7)
and tie it to the bottom of the pendant.
