If a home on the coast isn’t an option,
a lake is the next best thing. And if you
can’t find a lake, make one.
House-hunting means making compro-
mises, and one amenity that isn’t always
available is a water view. “If you want
100-acres-plus, and you want horse facili-
ties and all of those things that go with it,
you’re going to have to find something in-
land,” says Mike Brady, broker associate
for Sotheby’s International Realty in Cali-
fornia’s Santa Ynez Valley. But inland of-
ten means no water.
The price of putting in a lake or pond

varies greatly, but a
small 2-acre pond can
be constructed for
about $50,000, says

based in Omaha.
Large lakes can cost
millions.
Whatever style you choose, do your re-
search, he says. “Like anything else, if it’s
built well it lasts longer.” For man-made
lakes, he adds, that means quality pipes,
