If a home on the coast isn’t an option,
a lake is the next best thing. And if you
can’t find a lake, make one.
House-hunting means making compro-
mises, and one amenity that isn’t always
available is a water view. “If you want
100-acres-plus, and you want horse facili-
ties and all of those things that go with it,
you’re going to have to find something in-
land,” says Mike Brady, broker associate
for Sotheby’s International Realty in Cali-
fornia’s Santa Ynez Valley. But inland of-
ten means no water.

the impact on the property’s value. “Peo-
ple see them as a huge liability if they
know there is maintenance coming up.”
Despite all the hurdles, many home-
owner feel it’s worth it. “It evokes an old
traditional thing that most people really
are attracted to,” says Mr. Brady. “It
makes people feel calm and it’s inviting.”
