Michael Long


Michael Long’s work covers a wide range of topics related to focus on form/
forms, and the role of the linguistic environment. He has been a strong
defender of the critical period hypothesis. He was the symbol of the mod-
ernist/cognitive approach to SLA along with his colleagues in Hawaii for a
long time.

Henry Widdowson


Henry Widdowson has been a highly influential contributor to the commu-
nicative language teaching movement through his promotion of functional
perspectives on language. He has had an impact on both sides of the Atlantic
and worked on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English
for Special Purposes (ESP) well before it became fashionable.
