wantsmore.Intheworldtoday,
however,
itisdangerous
toseemtoo
powerhungry,
tobeovertwith
yourpowermoves.Wehavetoseemfairanddecent.Soweneedtobe
subtle~—congenialyetcunning,
democratic
yet
devious.This
gameofconstant
duplicitymost
resembles
thepowerdynamic
that
existed
inthe
scheming
world
of
theoldaristocraticcourt.Throughout
history,
acourthasalways
formeditselfaroundthe
personinpower—king,
queen,emperor,
leader.Thecourtierswhofilledthiscourtwereinan
espe-cially
delicateposition:They
hadtoservetheir
masters,butifthey
seemedto
fawn,
ifthey
curriedfavortooobviously,
theothercourtiersaroundthemwouldnoticeandwouldact
against
them.Attempts
towinthemas-ter’s
favor,then,
hadtobesubtle.Andevenskilledcourtiers
capable
ofsuch
subtlety
stillhadto
protectthemselvesfromtheirfellow
courtiers,whoatallmomentswere
scheming
topush
themaside.Meanwhilethecourt
wassupposed
to
representtheheight
ofciviliza-tionandrefinement.Violentorovert
power
moveswerefrowned
upon;counierswouldworksilently
andsecretly
against
anyamongthemwhousedforce.Thiswasthecouxtier’sdilemma:While
appearing
the
veryparagonofelegance,
they
hadtooutwitandthwarttheirown
opponentsinthe
subtlestof
ways.Thesuccessfulcomtierlearnedovertimetomakeallofhismoves
indirect;
ifhestabbedan
opponentintheback,
itwaswithavelvetglove
onhishandandthesweetestofsmilesonhisface.Insteadofusing
coercion oroutrighttreachery,
theperfect
courtier
gothis
waythrough
seduction,charm,deception,
and
subtlestrategy,alwaysplanning
severalmovesahead.Lifeinthecourtwasanever-endinggame
thatre-quired
constantvigilance
andtacticalthinking.
Itwascivilizedwar.Today
wefaceapeculiarly
similarparadox
tothatofthecourtier:Everything
must
appearcivilized,
decent,democratic,andfair.Butifweplayby
thoserulestoostrictly,
ifwetakethemtooliterally,
we
are
crushedby
thosearounduswhoarenotsofoolish.Asthe
greatRenaissancediplo-
matandcourtierNiccoloMachiavelli
wrote,
“Anymanwhotriestobegood
allthetimeisboundtocometoruin
amongthe
greatnumberwhoarenotgood.”
