All the basic features of this app, including those used in our guide, are free.
Advanced features (not covered) require the paid-for Pro version.

If you have a lot of duplicates on the Mac’s
disk, it could take hours to manually review
them and select the ones to delete. The
Auto Select button automatically selects
duplicates to be deleted for you, saving
time and effort. Before using it, visit the
app’s preferences and configure how it
works out which files to delete and which
ones to keep. After all, you don’t want to
accidentally delete the wrong files when
cleaning up the disk.

1

Build Skip List
Go to Preferences>Skip List and there
is a list of folders. The app skips them when
scanning. Click the ‘+’ icon at the bottom and
add other files or folders to skip.

2

Create deletion rules
On the Auto Select tab are the rules for
selecting/deleting files. You can for example,
only select duplicates outside of Photos library
and never delete anything inside the library.

Step-by-step Seek and destroy file duplicates

1

Get started
Install and run Duplicate File Finder
Remover from the Mac App Store. Click ‘Scan
Home Folder’ to scan everywhere, drop folders
on it or, as we will do, click ‘Choose Folder’.

4

Select a category
After scanning, choose either a bar chart
or pie chart using the buttons at the bottom. To
see duplicate files, select a category from the
menu, like Pictures or Movies.

2

Select multiple folders
You may wish to exclude some folders
from scanning, so click the first folder and then
Cmd+click additional folders to scan. Click the
‘Open’ button to continue with them.

5

Remove or keep
What you see depends on the file
category and here you can browse and view
videos. Play each one, choose which to keep,
right-click and select ‘Keep only this copy’.

3

Check and scan
Scroll through the list of folders and if you
change your mind, hover the mouse over one
and click the minus icon to remove it. If you are
happy with the selection, scan.

6

Review and remove
Browse the duplicates and select the
ones to keep and remove. Click ‘Review and
Remove’ and then check the list of files to
delete. Click ‘Remove’ if you are ok with them.
