A STASH of Second World
War documents including
secret D-Day maps is
going up for auction.
Among them are an air

a note to then US general
Dwight Eisenhower.
Ex-RAF serviceman
Mike Frith, 73, bought
them “many years ago”.
The self-confessed
hoarder rediscovered
them at his Lincoln home
and showed antique
dealer Mark Hebblewhite.
Mr Hebblewhite said: “I
was holding history in my
hands. It felt like my ‘Del
boy’ moment.”
The sale is on March 11,
at bonhams, London.

DRAMATIC footage of the first
attack on British civilians
during a World War has been
discovered at a flea market.
The five-minute newsreel, now
restored, shows the aftermath of the
shelling of Hartlepool, Co Durham,
by German ships on December 16,

  1. Some 130 people were killed
    and more than 500 wounded.
The film was in a box of broken
cameras bought at a market for £20
    by Mark Simmons, Hartlepool
    council’s museums curator. He said
the film, also showing the attacks

on Scarborough and Whitby, was
“mostly previously unseen footage”.
Expert Graham Relton said it was
of “unique historical significance”.
