Basic Rules for

Nurturing Creativity

Creatives generally flourish in places where

they feel safe and accepted

Creative ideas are often fragile and need to

be protected.

Your creative successes will often be preceded

by failures.

Accept supportive feedback that builds on your

strengths and never concentrate only on your

weaknesses or faults.

Creativity is often born from chaos, conflict, and

heartbreak. Creativity can be a way of creating

order, dealing with anger or grief, or solving

problems as we seek to regain a sense of balance

and control. Respect the time and space needed

to work this out.

Respect your need for quiet. Listen, remember,

and retreat so you can replenish.

Characteristics of

Creatives

Most work in rhythms, not consistently. We

usually have a burst of productivity followed

by a lull.

Uninhibited in expressing their opinion.

In females, independence, assertiveness, or

aggressiveness.

In males, can be emotional and very sensitive.

Heightened emotional sensitivity.

Sensitive to beauty and visibly moved by

aesthetic experiences.

Sensitive to overly critical examination or

authoritarian communication.

Love to communicate and express ideas well.

Exhibit unconventional thinking and problem

solving.

Appear straightforward and candid with others.

Creatives’ Struggles

Can be sloppy and not detail oriented.

Often run late.

Can be temperamental and withdrawn at times.

Challenge authority and tend to be stubborn.

Most creatives have some form of dyslexia:

difficulty distinguishing left from right, etc.

Struggle with consistency, discipline, can be

unreliable and disorganized.

Frequently distracted and can quickly grow

impatient.

Self-care can be compromised when you become

consumed in a project.

People can perceive you as intense, sometimes

exhausting.

Creatives need to be mindful of their relationship

with drugs and alcohol.

What Creatives Need

You need freedom and independence.

You need grounding, security, and stability.

You thrive on working odd hours. Find a

profession that allows you freedom.

You have unconventional, quirky, and different

ideas. Find people and jobs that cherish that.

You crave flexibility in your work hours, relation-

ships, and environment. You might want to avoid

jobs with a high level of structure and detail, like

accounting, copy editing, or anything with lots of

spreadsheets.
