PLANET PEA-PLE SIRI 29

(Sun May09cfyK) #1

Each group must have one student acting as the "molecule."

States of Matter

To teach students about the states of
matter (solid, liquid, and gas) through a

fun and interactive relay race activity.

OBJECTIVE

Cones or markers to set up a relay course
Stopwatch or timer
Printed signs or placards labeled "Solid,"
"Liquid," and "Gas"
Whistle or bell to start and stop the race

materials

Intro:

Begin with a brief discussion on the three
states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Explain that the students will participate
in a relay race that involves mimicking
the molecular structure of each state of
matter.

Setup:

game

Set up a relay course with cones or
markers, with three stations labeled "Solid,"
"Liquid," and "Gas" at equal distances
apart.
Place the printed signs or placards labeled
with the states of matter at each station.

At the start signal (whistle or bell),
the first "molecule" from each group
will mimic the state of matter they
represent.

gas:

solid:

liquid:

Students must huddle closely together,
forming a tight cluster to represent the
closely packed molecules of a solid.
Students can move more freely but
should stay relatively close together,
representing the molecules in a liquid
that can flow but remain close.
Students can move freely and spread out,
mimicking the molecules of a gas that
are far apart and move independently.

The "molecule" must then run
to the next station (Liquid,
Gas, or Solid) and change their
molecular structure
accordingly.

The next "molecule" in line repeats
the process.

Continue until all "molecules" have completed the relay and
returned to their original station.
