The higher dynamic range of a raw file
means that badly overexposed photos
can – to an extent – be fixed afterwards.
Here, our original image (shot in the camera’s
Raw + JPEG setting) is very badly blown out.
Attempting to correct the JPEG version is
impossible, resulting in bland, washed out
highlights and an unnatural color shift.
By contrast, correcting the raw version
results in an image that, while not perfect,
clearly displays greater detail in the delicate
highlights and holds up to severe correction.
