“Two reasons for using
a YubiKey instead of an
authenticator app are:
convenience and an added
layer of security. In addition,
a physical key requires
human touch so it can’t
be hacked remotely.”
Yubico also developed its own authenticator app for ser-
vices that don’t integrate with the key itself. The Yubico
Authenticator app exists for desktop computers, tablets,
and smartphones, and the advantage of using this app
instead of others is that the Yubico Authenticator app
allows you to store your credentials on a YubiKey; not on
your mobile phone or computer. Thus, your device security
cannot be compromised.
With a YubiKey 5 NFC, you don’t even have to plug in the
key; just hold it near an NFC-enabled Android, Windows 10,
or iOS device, and it will send its authentication data to, for
example, Brave, the first browser on iOS that works with
the WebAuthn protocol over Lightning connectors. For that
to work, though, you’ll need one of Apple’s latest iPads
or iPhones. n
