Что�бы + infinitive
When что�бы means ‘in order to, so as to’, it is followed by an infinitive.
Мари�на написа�ла письмо�, что�бы описа�ть Петербу�рг свое�й
подру�ге
‘Marina wrote a letter (in order) to describe St Petersburg to her friend’.Although ‘in order’ is frequently omitted from such English sentences,
что�бы is generally only omitted after verbs of motion:
Мы пришли� поговори�ть c ва�ми
‘We came to have a talk to you’.Что�бы + past tense
When что�бы means ‘in order that, so that’, it is followed by the past tense:
Mapи�нa нaписа�ла письмо�, что�бы её подру�га прие�халa в
Петербу�рг
‘Marina wrote a letter so that her friend would come to Petersburg’.Что�бы used with хоте�ть
Мари�на хо�чет, что�бы её подру�га прие�хала ле�том
‘Marina wants her friend to come in summer’.Note that, if the subject of both verbs is the same, then the infinitive is
used instead of the что�бы construction:
Её подру�гa хо�чет прие�хать зимо�й

Change the sentences using чтобы and the word in brackets.
For example:
Я хочу� купи�ть газе�ту (ты) –
