Russian Names

Russians have three names: и�мя ‘first name’, о�тчество ‘patronymic

or father’s name’ and фaми�лия ‘surname’. The patronymic is formed

from the father’s first name with the suffix -овнч or -eвич for a son,

• овна or -евна for a daughter. Ива�н Ива�нович Петpо�в has a son
  Ю�рий Ива�нович Петро�в and a daughter Мари�на Ива�новна
  Петро�ва. Note that there is also a feminine form of the surname,
  ending in -a. Patronymics end in -ович, -овна if the name ends in
  a consonant and -евич, -евна if they are derived from a name end-
  ing in a vowel. Алексе�й Ива�нович Петро�в has a son Дми�трий
  Алексе�евич Петро�в and a daughter Татья�на Алексе�евна
  Петро�ва.
