The family-owned Beech and Rich
company in Springfield recently cel-
ebrated 100 years in business.
The company, which provides
sand blasting, parts cleaning, pow-
der coating, and painting services,
was founded by English immigrant
Frederick Beech and his business
partner, William Rich in April 1924.
In the 1940’s, Beech bought Rich
out, although both men remained
involved with the company and rep-
resented in the name, according to
Beech’s son, James Beech.
Since then, the company has
remained in the Beech family.
“Just about all of the relatives have
worked at our company at one time
or another,” said Frederick Beech’s
daughter, Jeanita “Jeep” Hegner.
She worked for Beech and Rich for
more than 30 years, herself, and she
said even her mother and grandfather
were involved with the company.
“It’s a family business, and we’ve
all kicked in when needed,” she said.

Over the years, they have done a
variety of jobs, from painting build-
ings in their early days, to the rails
for the Linear Path and the cupola in
the Leila Arboretum Kaleidoscope
Garden.
According to James Beech, they
have done jobs as far away as New
Jersey and Texas.
They have also adapted with
changes in technology, starting out
with only painting and blasting and
then shifting away from exterior
painting to focus on in-shop powder
coating and other types of finishing.
Hegner said the first location of
Beech and Rich was at 382 North
Washington Avenue, which is now
the location of Faith Temple Church
of God in Christ.
In the 50’s, they moved to their
current location, 525 N 20th Street,
and in the 80’s, they bought another
building directly behind it that
had previously belonged to Clark
Equipment, which now houses their
large blasting and painting booths, a
batch oven, and storage space.
Clark Equipment had been one of
their biggest customers, according to

James Beech, so the loss of that busi-
ness when Clark moved away was
a major factor in their shift towards
focusing on in-shop finishing ser-
vices, rather than taking jobs that
required more travel.
At one time, they also maintained
a secondary location in a converted
barracks at the airport, he said.
James Beech took over the compa-
ny in 1970, after his father was killed
in a plane crash.
Frederick Beech was leaving Marks
Airfield, in Lawton, on his way back
to Battle Creek, when his 1937 Waco
plane suffered engine failure and
crashed.
He was involved with five aviation
clubs and associations and owned
several airplanes, and Hegner said
he would be proud to know that the
Waco plant is now located in Battle
Creek.
Although he only graduated 8th
grade, according to Hegner, “he was
a go getter.”
