Pat VandenHeede’s property in 1908 was part of a golf course which made
planting it difficult due to the sandy soil after she purchased the home in the
1990s. Now, it’s like a finely landscaped cool forest path. (Shopper News photo by

gifts and grants,” she noted, “and
they do a fabulous job of maintaining
a stunning campus that is enormous
and they provide educational oppor-
tunities through the Kaleidoscope
Garden to youths so we want to con-
tinue to support that jewel in Battle
Creek.”
Most of the garden committee
members are also members of the
Calhoun County Master Gardener
Association (CCMGA) which any-
one can join whether they are certi-
fied MSU Master Gardeners or not,
said Stetler.
“You can just be an avid gardener
and come and learn and join the
group,” she said.
In fact, many members of the
CCMGA volunteer to help LAS
maintain the gardens at the West
Michigan Avenue city park which
is not on the tour this year as it has
been in the past.
“It’s always such a fun weekend,”
said Stetler, “and we’re hoping
people come out and join us. The
ticket is good for two days so if they
want to do a few of the gardens on
Saturday and the rest on Sunday,
they can.”
Gardens on the tour are owned by:
- Dawn and Peter Ware at 7527
Stoney Creek Drive, Augusta.
Dawn is a well experienced gar-
dener of more than 22 years now.
She enjoys drafting plans prior to
planting anything in the ground.
Her love of gardening, she said,
stems from her grandmother, an
aunt and an old neighbor.
She claims she started with formal
gardens but has evolved into more of
a cottage style garden.
She enjoys the mixture of both
sun and shade plants, perennials and
annuals including some vegetables.
“Dawn has become very creative
and incorporates planters, boxes,
fountains, hardscape paths and gates
and trellis for vines,” according to
her garden description.
Peter Ware handles woodworking
fixtures for the yard such as an arbor
and decorative gate.
Visitors will find their large yard
easily accessible, the committee said.
- Jill Cornell and son, Ryan, at
7510 Stoney Creek Drive, Augusta.
Gardening for 24 years, Jill
describes hers as a perennial garden
using colors that catch her eye and
they will probably catch yours as
well. Jill also made use of natural
landscape materials such as rock to
complement her garden with help
from her son Ryan. You will see
tiered rock gardens and stone walk-
ways engineered by him.
Jill was influenced by both her
mother and her friend Dawn on her
gardening style, and it just continued
to grow. In fact, Dawn’s garden is
also featured this year on the Garden
Tour across the street from Jill’s.
Special features of the cottage
garden include an arbor, paths and
raised beds. There are also some
small water features enhancing the
gardens. Due to the sloping areas,
this garden is not wheelchair acces-
sible.
