When people are driving into

downtown Battle Creek on the

Penetrator, they may have wondered

about the stone tower in Monument

Park.

The statue of Sojourner Truth and

C.W. Post in the park are self-expla-

nitory, but the stone tower may be a

mystery.

Local historian Kurt Thornton

has been creating a series of history

programs for AccessVision called

“I’ll BC-ing You,” featuring stories

about Battle Creek subjects, and his

latest video program tells the story

of another local historian, James H.

Brown, and his stone history tower

in Monument Park.

Thornton came up with the idea for

creating local history video programs

after watching the PBS series “The

Civil War,” by Ken Burns, back in

the 1990s.

“Burns created his incredible pro-

gram by using still images and add-

ing motion, by panning or zooming

across the photos,” said Thornton. “It

gave still images a feeling of move-

and I thought that by using that same
technique, I could tell stories about
Battle Creek’s amazing history.”

After years of accumulating more
than 40,000 digital images of local
historic scenes, Thornton contacted
Battle Creek’s AccessVision studios,

and found out that the organization
offered classes in a digital editing
program named Final Cut Pro.
Interestingly, the software included
a feature called “The Ken Burns
Effect,” which makes it possible to
create those digital special effects

  • to give movement to still photo-
    graphs.
    Thornton comes by his interest
in local history from his mother,
Frances Thornton, who spent most of
her life collecting and sharing Battle
    Creek history.
    “Mom (Frances) loved Battle
    Creek and loved collecting any-
thing to do with its history,” said
Thornton. “Luckily, I was able to
    help her climb through buildings
    being demolished or going through
moldy boxes of stuff to find historic
    treasures.
“She passed that love of history
on to me, and I’m excited to use
    new methods of story-telling, like
    Facebook and these mini-documenta-
