There was a rainbow of ways kids
could make colorful art Wednesday
when the Color the Creek street art
festival hosted its annual Youth Day
in heart of downtown Battle Creek.
Teri Carlson took her three grand-
children to the event under sunny
skies for the second consecutive
year.
“They love the spray painting,” she
said. “And, we’re going to do some
chalk and then we’re going to do the
tee-shirts. It’s a good way to spend
the day with the kids out in the yard.
They love it.”
It’s was the ninth consecutive year
of Color the Creek, an public art
event created by Justin Andert who
also remains the primary coordinator,
though he has a team of artists who
help.
“It’s always awesome to see people
celebrating young people wanting to
try new activities,” said Andert dur-
ing the event at Mill Race Park. “So

it’s fun for Color the Creek to hope-
fully provide some new art activities
that they won’t get at school or any
other place like that. So that’s one
of the things we strive for when we
do these big events. And then just to
have it here right in downtown, and
hopefully have people see an awe-
some bustling city when you drive
by and see all these people in the
park on a nice summer day. So that’s
one of the awesome parts of it for
me, too.”
Kids could learn from profes-
sional mural artists like Jaziel Pugh
and Brandon Redman how to make
pictures using spray paint while also
helping to paint the big flowers onto
the “The Creek” installation that
remains in the park.
