In April of 2023, the facility put 10
beds back in operation followed by
another 10 beds in December.

“And this past April, we had eight

more beds back in operation,” she

said. “Probably most exciting of all,

as of July 1, the remaining 12 beds

are available. We are fully opera-

tional again.”

Cornish said that now, the organiza-

tion is learning what the new normal

is as a skilled nursing facility and

adult day care.

“We’re met with new requirements

related to infection prevention, new

federal regulations and more,” said

Cornish. “But my team has taken it

all in stride. In the coming months,

we hope to see some formerly offered

services return, such as skilled nurs-

ing rehab services in our adult day

care, as well as the return of our over-

night respite, just to name a couple of

items.”

Staffing, she said, continues to be

challenging though the facility is

now focusing on recruitment efforts,

educational opportunities, leadership

mentoring and coaching opportuni-

ties.

“I’m so grateful to all of our dedi-

cated staff who haven hung in there

with us,” she said, “through some

tough times and are helping our many

new faces learn the ropes.”

Experts to explain hummingbird banding Aug. 27

A pair of bird-banding experts will
exhibit hummingbird banding tech-
niques and share some of the research
data gleaned from banding projects
at a demonstration from 6:30-8
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the W.K.
Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Augusta.
Brenda Keith and Rich Keith of
the Kalamazoo River Valley Bird
Observatory, a Kalamazoo Nature
Center program, will begin with a
slideshow in the auditorium on the

research and data collected through

hummingbird banding.

They’ll then give a demonstration

in the sanctuary’s pollinator garden,

said spokesperson Cara Barnes.

There is a fee to attend, and people

must register by Aug. 25 at bit.ly/

kbs-hummingbird-banding-2024 to

reserve a spot.

The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

is located at 12685 East C Ave. in

Augusta.
