The Coburn Community Action
group held its first-ever car show on
the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 16 as
a recruitment tool to attract families
and potential pre-school youngsters
to its program.
The recruitment period last Friday
involved those interested in free pre-
school enrollment, those interested in
hiring in as pre-school teachers, plus
other community resource opportuni-
ties.
Coburn Community Action Center
is based at Coburn Elementary
school, located at 39 Fairhome Ave.
in Battle Creek.
“We’re a free head-start pre-school
program that’s income based, and we
offer free care each week Monday
through Friday,” said Amanda
Montague, Coburn Community
Action Center manager.

Amanda Montague, Coburn Community Action Center manager, said that
her group hopes to build on the number of vehicles it will have on display
in future years – with the idea being that having a car show during program
recruitment time helps bring in more potential candidates for its pre-school
offerings. For more information about Coburn Community Action, call (269)
441-2032. (Shopper News photo by Will Kowalski)
“Today, this is our recruitment
event, and we’re trying to get cre-
ative with our recruitment. So we
brought in the cars to help bring the
community in.
“And in the future,” continued
Montague, “we’re hoping to con-
tinue growing the car show part of
it. We’d love to have more and more
cars here ... as well as sign-ups for
our program.”
Montague said that through the
halfway point of last Friday’s four-
hour event from 3-7 p.m., all things
were going in a positive direction.
“We have people coming in to look
at the cars, and so far we’ve got two
kids enrolled plus a couple of people
interested in hiring in as pre-school
teachers with us – and those are two
of our main goals,” Montague said.
“So, it’s been a great day for us all
around.”
Montague said that enrollment and
the hiring in of pre-school teach-
ers is still currently taking place,
and that those interested should call
(269) 441-2032 and ask for family
advocate personnel at the center that
includes herself (Amanda), Taryn,
Nakia and/or Brandi.
“Just call and let us know you’re
interested, and we’ll hook you up,”
