BATTLE
CREEK
After starting the season on a high
note with a win over Gull Lake in
Week 1 of the high school football
season, the Marshall varsity football
team (1-1) suffered a 47-14 defeat at
the hands of Fowlerville on the road
on Sept. 6.
Despite Fowlerville running away
with the game as time wore on, it
was the Redhawks who were on the
front foot in the first quarter.
With 2:29 remaining in the quar-
ter, quarterback Austin Miller con-
nected with Akin Olapade for a
49-yard touchdown for the game’s
first points. After a failed conversion
attempt, Marshall held a 6-0 lead.
However, Fowlerville would
respond on its next drive with a
touchdown with eight seconds left in
the quarter on a 39-yard touchdown
pass, giving the Gladiators a 7-6 lead
at the end of the first quarter that it
would not relinquish.
With 7:15 left in the second quar-
ter, Fowlerville found the endzone
again, this time on a three-yard
touchdown pass, to extend its lead to
14-6.
The Gladiators would find the
endzone twice more before half-
time, including one with 21 seconds
remaining in the second quarter, to
take a 27-6 lead into the break after
scoring four unanswered touchdowns
in response to the Redhawks’ early
score.

Out of halftime, the Redhawks
tried to do their best to stay in the
game as Olapade took a handoff a
few minutes into the third quarter
looking for a rushing touchdown.
However, Olapade fumbled into the
endzone, but luckily for Marshall,
Liam Scott jumped on the ball and
recovered the fumble for a Marshall
score, cutting the deficit to 27-14
after a successful two-point conver-
sion.
From there, the Gladiators took full
control of the game with three more
unanswered touchdowns (one in the
third and two in the fourth quarter, to
pull away for the 33-point victory.
Fowlerville outgained Marshall
in total yards in the game 263-142,
including a 13-of-21 and three touch-
down performance from quarterback
Wyatt Soli.
For Marshall, Olapade led the
Redhawks in both rushing (44) and
receiving yards (49). Jace Saunders
led the Marshall offense in recep-
tions with three for 35 yards.
Through the air, Miller completed
7 of his 17 throws for 121 yards and
a touchdown.
On defense, Scott and Will Krueger
led the team in tackles with eight
apiece, while Colin Stealy and
Saunders recorded five tackles
apiece.

game at Parma Western.
