G-A Rams tame the Allegan Tigers
Galesburg-Augusta traveled to
Allegan on Friday, Sept. 13, and
came away with a hard-fought 17-14
win.
The Rams first score came in the
first quarter and was set up when
Jonah Ranes recovered a Tiger
fumble at the Allegan 46-yard line,
according to a press release.
It took just six plays for the Rams to
score, with Nolan Brewer hitting pay
dirt on a 10-yard run. Owen Pfeiffer
added the pat kick for an early 7-0
lead.
Allegan returned the favor with a
seven play, 79-yard drive to tie the
score.
Brysten Eicher-McColl raced the
final 51 yards for the touchdown and
Myles Jackson’s pat kick, and the
teams finished the quarter in a tie.
The second quarter was a bit sloppy
as the Rams were intercepted and
the Tigers fumbled the ball back to
the Rams, who returned the favor by
fumbling back to the Tigers.
G-A finally got the offense going,
moving the ball 57 yards on 10 plays
to take the lead.
Key plays in the drive were a fourth
down 8-yard Brewer to Jeremiah
Mann pass for a first down; a Brewer
to Jonah Ranes pass covering 13
yards; and a 16-yard completion
from Brewer to Ethan Thomas for the
touchdown.
Pfeiffer’s pat kick gave G-A a 14-7
halftime lead.
G-A opened the second half with a
14-play, 65-yard drive that stalled at
the Allegan 11-yard line.
Pfeiffer split the uprights with a
27-yard field goal that increased the
Rams lead to 17-7 with 6 minutes to
play in the third.
Allegan wasted little time in
responding.
On the first play of their possession,
Eicher-McColl raced 55 yards to the
Ram’s 31-yard line.
The Tigers culminated their 86-yard
drive with Jeremiah Edwards-Tate
covering the final 6 yards, with
Jackson converting the pat cutting the
Rams lead to 17-14 with 3 minutes to
play in the third quarter.
G-A consumed a large portion of
the fourth quarter with an eight-play
drive that started from their own
23-yard line.
A 19-yard completion to Thomas,
a 19-yard run by Levi Born, and a
16-yard scamper by C.J. Denard car-
ried the Rams to the Tiger’s 5-yard
line.
The drive stalled on the Allegan
1-yard line, giving the ball back to the
Tigers with about 4 minutes to play.
A 31-yard run by Edwards-Tate
made things a little uneasy for the
Ram faithful, but the defense held
and a fourth down pass play was
broken up by the secondary and the
Rams had their second straight win of
the young season.
G-A had a balanced rushing attack
with Ranes picking up 79 yards.
Born, Brewer and Denard pitched
in with 44, 36 and 31 yards, respec-
tively.
Nolan Brewer completed eight
passes for 109 yards; Ranes picked
up 36 yards on three catches; Thomas
counted 35 yards on two catches; and
Born caught one pass for 18 yards.
The defense held the Tigers without
a pass completion but gave up 284
yards rushing.
They did, however, come up with
the big plays when needed to seal the
victory, the press release stated.
Brewer led the defense with nine
tackles; Ranes made eight tackles
and recovered a fumble; and Dominic
Corsi collected eight tackles, with the
last one forcing the Tigers to attempt
the pass that fell incomplete and
ended the game.
Born and Bradley Hubbard each
made six tackles, and C.J. Denard had
five and a fumble recovery.
The Rams return home and will host
the Eagles of Schoolcraft on Sept. 20.
