On Feb.23, 1100, Che-tsung of Sung died and was succeeded by
his younger brother Hui-tsung. In the 9th month (Oct./Nov.), Hsia
envoys condoled and sacrificed and congratulated on Hui-tsung’s
enthronement. On Nov.5, they arrived with gifts to congratulate on
his birthday^33 (Sung shih 19:4a; 486:14b).
On Dec.28, 1100, envoys from Ch’ien-shun to the Liao court
requested a marriage (Liao shih 26:5b; 115:10a).
Ch’ien-shun’s great-grandfather Yüan-hao, the first emperor of
Hsia, had taken steps toward establishing a bureaucracy partially
modelled on the Sung system. In 1101, Ch’ien-shun for the first time
established an Academy with 300 government-supported students
(Sung shih 486:14b).
After Tao-tsung of Liao had died on Feb.12, 1101, and had been
succeeded by his grandson T’ien-tso, the latter sent envoys on Mar.5
to announce the death in Hsia. On May 5, Hsia envoys condoled at
the Liao court. On Jan., 1102, Hsia envoys congratulated T’ien-tso
on his enthronement (Liao shih 27:1b, 2a; 115:10a).
On July 9, 1102, envoys from Ch’ien-shun to the Liao court
requested a marriage (Liao shih 27:2b; 115:10b).
When fighting was resumed between Sung and Hsia, envoys from
Ch’ien-shun sought rescue from Liao on July 15, 1102 (Liao shih 27:
2b; 115:10b).
On July 19, 1103, envoys from Ch’ien-shun to the Liao court again
requested a marriage (Liao shih 27:3a; 115:10b).
On Nov.15, 1103, Hsia envoys to the Liao court sought help against
Sung (Liao shih 27:3a).
On July 6, 1104, two Hsia envoys to the Liao court again sought
help against Sung (Liao shih 27:3b; 115:10b).
On Jan.23, 1105, Hsia envoys requested the Liao court to attack
Sung (Liao shih 27:4a; 115:10b).
On Feb.14, 1105, T’ien-tso of Liao sent an Auxiliary Academician
of the Bureau of Military Affairs to remonstrate with the Sung court
and ask it to cease its attacks on Hsia (Liao shih 27:4a)
On Mar.21, 1105, T’ien-tso enfeoffed a lady of his house as Princess
of Ch’eng-an and married her to Ch’ien-shun (Sung shih 486:14b-15a;
Liao shih 27:4a; 115:10b).
