On Sep.28, 1120, a Chin mission was received at the Sung court.
Hui-tsung responded with an envoy of his own who received his orders
on Oct.12 (Sung shih 22:4a).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 1121) of the Chinese year 1120,
Sung envoys to the Chin court again requested territorial concessions
(Chin shih 2:15b).
On May 30, 1121, Chin envoys were received at the Sung court
(Sung shih 22:5a).
In the 3rd month (Apr./May) of 1122, Chin envoys to the Sung
court proposed a joint attack on Liao. On Oct.5, other Chin envoys
discussed the timing of this offensive (Sung shih 22:6b, 7a).
On Oct.20, 1122, Hui-tsung sent a goodwill mission to the Chin
court (Sung shih 22:7a).
On Dec.23, 1122, Chin envoys were received at the Sung court
(Sung shih 22:7b).
On Jan.2, 1123, Hui-tsung sent a goodwill mission to the Chin
court (Sung shih 22:7b).
On Jan.5. 1123, Chin forces conquered Yen (Peking) (map 11). The
Liao officials surrendered and were spared (Chin shih 2:19b).
On Jan.6, 1123, Chin envoys to the Sung court announced the
victory (Sung shih 22:7b).
On Feb.1, 1123, Chin envoys to the Sung court discussed mutual
obligations. On Feb.2, Sung sent a goodwill mission to the Chin court
and again asked for territorial concessions in exchange for annual
payments of silk. The envoys proposed that the border be delineated
and that a protocol be drawn up for the exchange of congratulatory
missions on the New Year’s Days and imperial birthdays (Sung shih
22:8a;Chin shih 2:20b).
On Mar.30, 1123, Chin envoys were received at the Sung court
(Sung shih 22:8b). On Apr.3, Hui-tsung sent a goodwill mission to the
Chin court (Sung shih 22:8b).
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 1123, a Sung army belatedly
reached Yen (Chin shih 2:21a).
The intense negotiations between Sung and Chin led to a treaty,
which was confirmed by oath letters from both sides. The Chin oath
letter was received at the Sung court on May 7, 1123. Even though
this treaty in its terminology was between equal partners, Sung was in
a much weaker position as its armies had contributed next to nothing
