The highest point in international relations was during the reign
of T’ai-tsung (627-649), followed by a reduction in the reigns of
Kao-tsung (650-683) and the Empress Wu (684-704). Then followed
another high under Hsüan-tsung (712-756). After the rebellion of An
Lu-shan in 755, the figures gradually decreased and reached their
nadir at the end of T’ang. During the Five Dynasties (907-960) and
Northern Sung (960-1127), the figures were steadily high but during
the Southern Sung (1127-1276) in the aggregate were the lowest for
