SIMPLE STOOL
The Builder: Roy Berendsohn
@askroypm
As Pop Mech’s veteran editor, Ber-
endsohn is used to having piles of
unused, unloved wood littering the
floor of his shop. But they never
go to waste. “If you have odd-sized
scraps that you don’t know what
to do with, don’t just burn ’em or
chuck ’em,” he says. “Build some-
thing out of them!”
It only took Berendsohn a few
hours to craft this bench/stool
hybrid from whatever bits of No. 2
grade Douglas Fir he could find—
the longest piece is 27 inches. He
grabbed an assortment of same-
length deck, a Kreg pocket, and
GRK wood screws to fuse all the
pieces together.
Now Berendsohn has another
place to set his power tools, and
give himself a break, in between
jobs. “If you put in enough time and
trouble,” he says, “there isn’t any-
thing you can’t build from ordinary
PH materials like a 2x4.”
