Step One: Open the lighthouse stock
image. If you’d like to download the
low-res watermarked version of this
image to follow along, click this link,
log in with your Adobe ID, and click
the Save to Library button. Double-
click the image in the Libraries panel
(Window>Libraries) to open it in Photo-
shop. To make it easier to work with the
image, increase the resolution of the
practice file. (We normally don’t recom-
mend enlarging images, but this is only
for practice purposes.) Go to Image>
Image Size, turn on the Resample check-
box, select Preserve Details 2.0 from the
Resample drop-down menu, set the
Width to 2,500 pixels, and click OK.
Grab the Pen tool (P) and set the
Tool Mode to Path in the Options Bar.
Carefully create a path around the body
of the lighthouse, making sure not to
include any of the base or the top. [For
tips on using the Path tool, click here
and here.—Ed.] In the Paths panel
(Window>Paths), double-click the
name of the Working Path, and rename
it “Lighthouse Body.” Command-click
(PC: Ctrl-click) on the path thumbnail
in the Paths panel to create a selection,
and press Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to
copy that selection to a new layer. In
the Layers panel, name the new layer
“Lighthouse Body Front.”

Step Two: Duplicate the Lighthouse
Body Front layer by pressing Command-J
(PC: Ctrl-J) again. Name the copy
“Light house Body Back.” Using the Rect-
angular Marquee tool (M), draw a selec-
tion around the top window. Hold the
Shift key, and select all the other win-
dows. Make sure the Lighthouse Body
Back Layer is the active layer in the Lay-
ers panel, and go to Edit>Fill. Set the
Contents drop-down menu to Content-
Aware, and click OK. After Photoshop
has removed those windows, cancel the
selection with Command-D (PC: Ctrl-D).
