› › HOW TO

Step 24: Now, duplicate the Ruby
Stairs, Plants, and Statue group; set
the blend mode to Vivid Light; and
leave the Opacity to 50%. Next,
expand the folder to see the three
layers within. Click on the bottom
adjustment layer’s mask to make it
active, and then Command-click (PC:
Ctrl-click) on the middle layer’s mask
to select its painted area. Press D to
set your Foreground color to white,
and press Option-Delete (PC: Alt-
Backspace) to fill the selection with
white on the bottom layer’s mask.
Then, delete the middle layer. Press
Command-D (PC: Ctrl-D) to deselect,
and reduce the Opacity of the two
remaining layers to 15%.
We only want to brighten the
lights on the stairs and the sides
of the stairs here, so click on the
duplicate group, and then click on
the Add Layer Mask icon (circle in a
square) at the bottom of the Layers
panel. Switch your Foreground color
to black, and with the Brush tool
still active, paint over the statue and
shadow, as shown here.

Step 25: The reflection of lights
on the water is next. Make a selec-
tion of the water using whichever
selection tool with which you’re
most comfortable.
