PS5 GAMES PREVIEW

The settings really
make the most of
PS5’s incredible
graphics capability.

to earn that one new piece of
armour or weapon you need to
give yourself an edge in the battles
to come. It does mean that, unlike
recent soulsborne Sekiro, Godfall
will likely encourage grinding for
higher-level gear.

PICK AND MIX
A game based around the drop-
in-drop-out gameplay of Destiny
and Monster Hunter: World, with
a heaving Dark Souls influence
behind the melee combat, feels
safe. But there are ideas here that
could raise this above what’s come
before: for example, Counterplay
has revealed bosses are designed
with counter moves that work
against multiple attackers – it
means when you’re fighting with
two friends, a boss will be able to
repel attacks even if you all strike
simultaneously.
Take into account PS5’s core
tenets of speed and accessibility
and Godfall could play and feel like
no other game. With a GPU and
CPU powering the ray-traced
lighting, reflections, and high-
fidelity textures, an SSD ensuring
little break in the carnage, and 3D
audio meaning you can hear
enemies approaching from every
angle, this could easily become our
day-one poster child for PS5.

hile we stress Sony has yet to
announce any games for PS5 at
the time of writing, we can piece
together some ideas of what we may be
playing at launch. Even before the
next-generation console was announced,
Polyphony Digital was demoing a version
of Gran Turismo Sport running in 8K on
secret hardware. And we know the
game’s cars were over-specced when
modelled to run on higher-end hardware,
with the dev keen to future-proof GT
Sport. So it’s easy to infer a version of
this racer could be with us at launch.

Racing games are perfect for a
console launch because the graphics devil
in all of us loves to drool over those
high-poly, high-fidelity visuals. It is telling
that Sony uses a version of GT Sport
ported to PS5 dev kits to demo the new
DualShock 5’s haptic feedback. We can
only assume that work could make its way
to PS5 at launch, or within the launch
window, as a demo.
What comes next is the really
interesting idea: a new Gran Turismo
sequel on PS5. It’s unconfirmed, it’s pure
speculation, but we’d love it to be real.

or a series set in ancient history,
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey took
some liberties (even by Assassin’s
Creed standards). But, it was awesome.
Minotaur? Slayed it, mate. Cyclops? Felled
by our hands. Gorgon? Every snake
exterminated. What if that same dev team
were let off the leash to really go full
mythology with its very own IP?
That’s where Gods & Monsters comes
in, a cartoony splash on the open world
action game that really embraces its
Greek mythology inspirations. The
legendary Typhon has toppled the
pantheon of gods, and it’s up to you, a
classic Greek hero, to restore them.

To help you on your quest the Gods
have bestowed special powers on you.
These have you exploring the large, lush
open world like never before – even taking
the air. And you’ll need to use them all to
take on the mythological creatures that
now terrorise the land, from hydra to
harpies, and much more besides.
It’s always great to see a brand-new
series, especially one from a team with
such a pedigree. As they’ve been able to
create their own storybook adventure
with an almost painterly cartoon art style,
it’s one of the most unique open world
games we’ve seen, and one that anyone
will be able to get lost in.
