Now compare this to a way of
sweeping in wash often favoured
by Turner: load your brush and sweep
it rapidly back and forth onto dry
paper. Where careful strokes were
critical to the previous approach,
speed is now of the essence.

Quickly rinse and load your brush
with clean water and continue
with the same rapid strokes to create
a lighter toning and gradation of the
initial colour.

Rinse your brush and load it with
warm colour, which will mingle
with the cool blue above as you
continue the same brushing process
down the page. I started with Yellow
Ochre, then moved to Cadmium Red,
allowing the colours to mingle where
they met.

Next, charge with some darker
values. Here, I used the warm
grey mixed earlier from Cobalt Blue
and a little Light Red. The exact
colours do not matter.
