Ancient Sites

Chinese archaeologists have un-
earthed a treasure trove of ancient
sites in Chongqing in southwest China.
According to the Chongqing
Municipal Institute of Cultural
GTKVCIGVJG³TUVEQORTGJGPUKXG
archaeological survey has been com-
pleted, unearthing 115 sites in Hechuan
District.
Wei Huang, an expert with the
institute, said most of the sites—80—
were from the Ming Dynasty (1368-
1644) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-
1911). The others were from periods as

times.
The relics include tombs, temples,
pagodas, military structures and
wharves.
“The abundant and reliable ar-
chaeological sites unearthed here not

for studying the history of the area,
but also new material evidence for in-
depth study of the military history of
the 13th century,” Huang added.

Treating Blue Algae

Chinese scientists have developed a
method for treating blue algae that

expected to have broad application
prospects in lake eutrophication
control,” Gu Xiaozhi, a researcher with
the team, said.
According to the China Water
Resources Bulletin, eutrophic lakes,
lakes that are rich in nutrients, thereby
triggering vegetation growth, account
for more than 70 percent of the 121
lakes in the country. This explains the
algae bloom. The bulletin says it has
become a problem in water environ-

ments that needs to be resolved
urgently.
Gu said the breakthrough in
the research lies in the independent

culant, a substance which promotes
the clumping of particles. It can

to the bottom, clearing the water.
The process generates no harmful
