172 CENTRAL EASTERN EUROPE
War saw 1
Warsaw is believed to have been founded in the late
13th century, when Duke Bolesław of Mazovia built a
castle here overlooking the Vistula river. It became
capital of Poland in 1596, making it one of Europe’s
youngest capital cities, with a population of nearly
two million. Most places of interest are located in
the historic centre, the geographical heart of the city,
which has now been declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. The Old Town (Stare Miasto), partially
surrounded by medieval walls, is the oldest district
in Warsaw. Next to it is the more recent New Town
(Nowe Miasto), which became a separate urban
entity in 1408. Almost completely destroyed during
the war, the reconstruction of these two districts was
an undertaking on a scale unprecedented in the
whole of Europe. Today, they are the most popular
tourist destinations in Warsaw.
