REST OF HUNGARY

DEBRECEN Trendo : Δ © ̊ 
Piac út 11–15 Tel (020) 286 2860

A real treasure, the Trendo restaurant provides an extensive menu of Italian pasta dishes and also plenty in the way
of paprika-flavoured Hungarian stews. A great wine list and a friendly host, who makes a point of visiting every
table, also help to make this one of the best restaurants in Hungary.

EGER Tulipánkert Vendéglő : f Δ ̊ 
Szépasszonyvölgy út 47 Tel (036) 412 533

A short drive southwest of Eger on Szépasszonyvölgy, this simple but idyllic restaurant has a terrace, garden and
wine cellar offering great Hungarian wines alongside superb cuisine. In summer a gypsy band creates a lively
atmosphere as the barbecue sizzles with fine local pork and sausages.

ESZTERGOM Csülök Csárda : Δ ̊ 
Batthyány út 9 Tel (033) 412 420

A short walk down Majer út, the popular Csülök Csárda is worth seeking for its good if unadventurous Hungarian
cuisine at decent prices. Its specialities include baked or boiled pork knuckle and catfish in paprika sauce. The wine
list is, in fact, better than that of its more famous neighbour, Primás Prince – a favourite among visitors to Esztergom.

FERTŐD Gránátos ¤ : 7 Δ 
Bartók Béla utca 1 Tel (099) 370 944

When in Fertőd there are few places better to enjoy a good meal than the colonnaded terrace at Gránátos. The
menu is simple but portions are generous and the quality of food is excellent. A coffee on the terrace, in the
shadow of the Esterházy Palace (see p363), is equally enjoyable.

GYŐR Belgian Beer Café : Δ © 
Árpád út 34 Tel (096) 889 460

The Royal Belgian Beer Café on the ground floor of Győr’s Raba hotel is a delightful place to eat, drink and relax.
Diners will find long wooden tables, a fine selection of Belgian beers, good food and a terrific atmosphere in the
evenings. The small street terrace fills up on summer evenings, when booking is advised.

GYŐR La Maréda : Δ © ̊ 
Apáca út 4 Tel (096) 510 980

Although the building dates from 1617, dining in this plush and opulent restaurant is like stepping into a scene
from the 19th century. Imperial charm lines the walls in the form of stucco reliefs, while fine cigars and wines
complement the enjoyable Hungarian cuisine.

KECSKEMÉT Kecskeméti Csárda és Borház : Δ ̊ 
Kölcsey út 7 Tel (076) 488 686

A short walk from the central square, this is one of the best traditional Hungarian restaurants in the country and
certainly the best on the southern Great Plain. The food is outstanding and the expert chefs are always keen to
push the boundaries of Puszta cuisine. Game is a speciality, but it comes at a price.

KESZTHELY Hungaria Gösser : Δ ̊ 
Kossuth Lajos utca 35 Tel (083) 312 265

On the pedestrianized part of Kossuth Lajos utca and the corner of Fő tér, this superb and popular restaurant is in
a wonderful, renovated Art Nouveau house, complete with stained-glass windows. The reasonably priced food is
traditional Hungarian with a modern twist. Booking is advisable.

KŐSZEG Taverna Florian 7 f Δ © ̊ 
Várkör 59 Tel (094) 563 072

Set in a quiet location just a short walk from the heart of Kőszeg, this splendid bright red house is four venues
in one. There is a wine cellar, a dining cellar, an elegant ground-floor restaurant and a garden and street café.
Diners can expect excellent Italian-influenced food and friendly service.

PÉCS Cellárium f © 
Hunyadi János út 2 Tel (072) 314 453

Housed in catacombs that allegedly provided shelter from attacking Ottomans, the Cellárium offers delicious local
specialities alongside classic dishes, including a number of choices for vegetarians. There is live music most
weekend evenings – reservations are essential for weekends.

PÉCS Aranykacsa 7 f Δ ̊ 
Teréz út 4 Tel (072) 518 860

The Aranykacsa (Golden Duck) serves tasty Hungarian food in a traditional setting within its ground floor restaurant
and outside on a pleasant terrace, while downstairs a lively bar and music venue stays open till the early hours.
As one might expect, given its name, local game is the speciality.
