items such as the Bollenhut, a straw
bonnet clus t ered with pompoms
once worn by the unmarried women
of the Gutach Valley. Look out for
some of the costumes worn at car ni-


val. Behind the museum, the old town
of Haslach is worth exploring for the
cluster of half-timbered houses
funded by a silver-mining boom.

This hotel has an excellent restaurant
that serves light regional nouvelle
cuisine, such as marinated pot roast
seasoned with mustard seeds. Simple
meals are also served in the hotel’s
wine cellar.

north through Lahr. In Offenburg take
the Hauptstrasse and follow signs to
Durbach. There are many places to
park along the road through Durbach.

An important stop on the Badische
Weinstrasse, Durbach is of particular
interest to wine lovers for its shop,
the Durbacher Winzergenossenschaft
(closed Sun). This wine cooperative
offers a great selection of distin-
guished and well-priced local wines
and is liberal with its samples. The
shop is well-marked and lies to the
right of the main road at
Durbach’s center. It faces the
Schloss Staufenberg, which
looms over the town from
a vine yard-draped hill.
The occupants of this
11th-cen tury castle have been
documented as produc ing
wine since 1391. Visitors are
not allowed inside the castle,
but can sample its wines in
its earthy wine bar or out doors on a
terrace with spectacular views.

DAY TRIP OPTIONS
Baden-Baden (on the A5 highway) is
a great base for day trips.

Spend the day at the interesting
Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum 6
to get an insight into life on a farm
in the 16th century.

From Baden-Baden follow the tour
to the museum.

Themes and thrills
With more than enough attractions
to fill a day, Europa-Park 8 near
Rust is ideal for families.

Take the tour to the Schiltach and
then to Rust. Follow signs to the park.

Wines and vineyards
Try a relaxed tour of the Badische
Weinstrasse, following it from the
spa town of Baden-Baden 1 to

Durbach 9 , where lovely walks
through vineyards will enable visitors
to appreciate the region. Also take
a break and taste the local wines
at Durbacher Winzergenossenschaft,
the wine cooperative shop
in Durbach.

Take the route to the B500, then turn
in the direction of Karlsruhe, then
turn left on to the B3 following signs
to Durbach.
