DRIVE 21: Cuckoo Clock Country
PLAN YOUR DRIVE
Start/finish: Freiburg to Schluchsee.
Number of days: 2–3 days, allowing
half a day to explore Freiburg.
Distance: 108 miles (173 km).
Road conditions: Roads are well
paved but often steep and winding,
though driving is not particularly
difficult. In winter, snow can cover
the higher portions of the drive;
winter tires are recommended.
When to go: This drive is best
avoided in the winter months
(December–March) when the top
of the Feldberg is snowbound.
Opening times: Most attractions are
open daily. Shops are usually open
from 9am to 5pm from Monday to
Friday, and close early on Saturdays.
Many shops and services are closed
on Sundays. Restaurants generally
close around 10pm.
Main market days: Freiburg: daily.
Shopping: Cuckoo clocks and
woodcarvings can be bought from
Uhren-Park in Triberg.

view the chronicles of the cuckoo
clock by first visiting the Deutsches
Uhrenmuseum in Furtwangen and
then the cuckoo-clock capital of Triberg.
Adventure lovers will enjoy exploring
the high mountains, water falls,
