The town of Bad Tölz straddles the Isar
river, with a leafy spa quarter on the
west bank facing an attractive, hilly old
town. The main street, Marktstrasse,
owes its present appear ance to the
Munich architect Gabriel von Seidl,
who in the early 20th cen tury
re-emphasized the street’s Alpine
character. To the south of Marktstrasse
is the Gries, a quaint artisans’ quarter.
ª Take the B13/Lenggrieser Strasse.
At Sylvensteinsee reservoir, turn


left on to the B307 and continue to
Tegernsee. Park at the marked parking
lot in Strandbad and Ortsmitte.

Crystal-clear Tegernsee is framed by
wooded hills and mountains rising
from its southern shore toward the
Austrian border. It is among the most
chic of Bavaria’s mountain lakes, with
a sprinkling of resorts along its shores,
and has a reputation as an upmarket
destination. The lake acts as a scenic


backdrop to a range of activities, from
mountain biking to paragliding.
ª Take the B307/ Münchner Strasse.
At Am See, turn right to Hausham, then
right again to the level crossing. Turn
right on to the B307 for Schliersee. Park
along the route on marked lots.


u Bayrischzell

Nestled at the foot of the 6,030-ft
(1,838-m) Wendelstein is the rustic
village of Bayrischzell. Wendelstein
can be ascended by cable car (open
daily; departures hourly; http://www.wendel
steinbahn.de) from Osterhofen just
west of the village, or by old-fashioned
cog rail way from Brannenburg in the
northeast. To the east of the village lies
the Sudelfeld, Germany’s largest
contigu ous ski complex. It has 21 lifts
and 19 miles (31 km) of red (inter me-
diate) and blue (easy) pistes, though
there are some black (advan ced)
runs, too (www.sudelfeld.de).
ª Continue on the B307/Alpenstrasse
and pass Oberaudorf to Niederaudorf.
Turn left to Brannenberg along
Rosenheimer Strasse. At Brannenberg,
turn right on to Nussdorfer Strasse to
Neubeuern. Turn right to Frasdorf and
get on to the Rosenheimer Strasse to
reach Aschau im Chiemgau. Park at
the parking lot near the tourist office.

splendor. Founded around AD 725,
the Benedictine abbey was rebuilt in
Baroque style after 1669 and secu-
larized in 1803; it is now home to
the Salesians Don Boscos, a Roman
Catholic order.
ª Continue along the B11, bypassing
Brichl, and turn right on to the B472 for
Bad Tölz. Park in a river side parking lots
or on-street in the spa quar ter
(Kurzone) close to the tourist office.
