The Province of Hainaut can be divided into
three areas. The north is attractive farmland,
with châteaux at Beloeil, Attre, Seneffe and
Ecaussinnes-Lalaing as well as the impressive
cathedral city of Tournai. The central band is
the old industrial area running from Mons to
Charleroi via La Louvière. This not only has
exhilarating indus trial constructions, such as
the colossal canal lift at Ronquières, but also
some exquisite cultural treasures, as at the
Musée Royal de Mariemont. In the southern
sector, the rural landscape becomes wooded
as it rises into the Ardennes hills. The lakes of
L’Eau d’Heure are a huge water sports centre.
