says. “You’re on an island, and you truly feel like
you’re on an island. I know a gentleman who lives
in Oceana and is building a cluster of houses in a
compound area on an island there. The Bahamas is
a great place to go.”

MONEY MATTERS
For folks who find themselves escaping to the
islands regularly, purchasing a second home in the
Bahamas is extremely appealing. Kara Zeder Rosen,
a realtor with The Jills Zeder Group, got married
on Harbour Island, famous for its stunning stretch
of pink sand beaches, and also owns a home in the
Exumas. From a real estate perspective, she notes
that, largely, waterfront homes in the Bahamas are
more affordable than they are in the Sunshine State.
“In South Florida, there are few beachfront
single-family homes, whereas in the Bahamas they
are much more common,” Zeder Rosen says.
She adds, “It’s also hard to find delicious conch
salad in Florida.”
Whenyoudiveintothenitty-grittyofthenumbers,
owning a Bahamas home not only has its perks in
ambience, but also as an investment. This means
you can truly have your conch salad and eat it, too.
“The Bahamas is considered a tax-friendly
destination with no capital gains, inheritance tax,
or corporate and personal income tax,” says Gavin
Christie, CIPS, CRS, managing partner with C.A.
Christie Real Estate. “The government has put in
certain incentives allowing buyers to apply
for permanent residency, which starts with a
$750,000 investment. The Bahamas maintains
a stable environment for investment and
offers potential investors a peaceful and stable
democratic environment.”

PERKS APLENTY
Advantageous financial benefits aside, island-
goers just can’t get enough of that “Bahama Blue”
water or properties that allow them to feel at home
while catering to their wants and needs with the
same exemplary service they would find at the best
resorts in the world.
Case in point: The Residences at Baha Mar. With
access to a superyacht, the exclusive NEXUS day
club, distinguished golfing and a private island (just
to name a few amenities), homeowners can live a
VIP lifestyle on the property and go all in on their
commitment to stepping away from the daily grind.
But, really, the greatest amenity of all might just be
the calming effects of the property’s verdant scenery.
“Mostoftheresidenceshaveanunobstructedview
of the ocean, and those that don’t are surrounded

by lush landscaping. It’s all tropical plants and
greenery,” Conroy says. “From any residence, the
beach is no more than a minute or two walk away.”
The Residences at Baha Mar feature a variety of
design concepts, one of which includes freestanding
villasthatpracticallysitonthebeachitself,soowners
can feel as though they have their own enclave on
the sand. But no matter which type of residence a
buyer chooses, they’re enveloped in island life.
“The residences were designed to bring light into
your home,” Conroy explains. “There are floor-to-
ceiling windows and balconies — it’s absolutely a
glorious view from every residence. You wake up
to see the turquoise water, tropical plants, beautiful
gardens and pools — it’s spectacular.”

ISLAND EXPERIENCES
Florida beaches have a vibe all their own, while
the sandy oceanfront stretches of the Bahamas
are the country’s hallmark. They may feel like
neighbors in proximity, but the experiences in each
location couldn’t be more different, something
Floridians appreciate.
“My husband thinks the spearfishing in the
Bahamas is second to none,” Sharp says. “There’s
nothing like catching your lunch or dinner right
before eating it. Ocean to table! Our family also

enjoys snorkeling, diving and swimming with
dolphins. Swimming with pigs in Exuma is unique.
You cannot do that in Florida, and the experience
makes the trip worthwhile.”
Just because the islands offer an environment
that makes you feel as though you’re in a remote
part of the world doesn’t mean it’s all beach, all the
time. There are plenty of cultural experiences, too.
“Baha Mar has the largest collection of Bahamian
art in the world,” Conroy says. “We have an art curator
who has put together the most wonderful art program.
You can take art lessons. We have an art gallery. You
can walk through the resort and see the incredible art
we’ve collected over the past few years. We have an
artist-in-residency program. We are very proud of our
commitmenttosupporttheBahamianartcommunity.
It sets us apart and creates a genuine sense of place.”
Zeder Rosen points out that the Bahamas also
offers some of the best cruising opportunities in the
world, if you wish to escape by boat rather than stay
on land.
“It’s truly one of the most magical places on
Earth,” she says. “There is a ton of diversity between
the different island chains, so you can go to the
Bahamas multiple times and experience it like it’s
your first time every time.”
