Create a mini sewing kit to stay organised while

Q


uilting on the go is so much
easier if you know that all your
essential sewing tools are safe
and in one place. Whip up this
tiny sewing kit for your portable
quilting arsenal to keep track of
needles, thimbles, thread cutters and
more. It’s lightweight and perfect for
other hand-stitching projects too, such
as finishing binding – whatever you
feel like making when you’re out and
about. Once you’ve mastered the
technique, make more sewing kits for
yourself or a quilting friend!


Step 1 Cut out 36 paper hexagons
using the template on page 99. Tack
a piece of fabric around each one,

Materials
Q Basic quilting kit, see page 16
Q Paper for hexagon templates
Q 36 assorted fabric squares:
2in (5cm)
Q Wadding: 5x12½in (12.5x32cm)
Q Lining fabric: 5½x13in (14x33cm)
Q Strip of bias binding:
22x1¼in (56x3cm)
Q Strip of bias binding:
6x1¼in (15x3cm)
Q Velcro dots
Q Fabric pen
Q Co-ordinating thread
Q Templates on page 99

Seam allowance
Q All seams are ¼in (6mm)

Finished size
Q The top measures 4¼x11in
(11x26cm) before assembly

The final top will measure just over
4¼x11in (11x26cm) before assembly.

Step 2 Remove the paper templates
from the fabric hexagons^2 and give
the top a good press with a hot iron.

Step 3 Layer up the patchwork,
wadding and lining fabric, tack
together and quilt over the top in
simple straight lines, as shown.^3 Take
time to remove any stray threads or
fuzz from your quilt top, especially the
underside – you don’t want errant dark
threads showing through.

Step 4 Trace the sewing kit template
on page 99 onto paper and cut out.
