applies blush higher on the cheek-tops
and across the bridge of the nose in
a sun-flushed, almost sunburnt sweep.
Wherever you place it, apply gradually
and in fine layers, and if you go overboard,
a tiny bit of foundation buffed on top
quickly tones down excess pigment. Don’t
shy away from shades that initially seem
neon-bright or unconventional; when textures
are this translucent, even the brightest
blushes look clear and pretty on skin.
Vivid tangerine is surprisingly wearable
on all skin tones – let it do the work of
a bronzer, but without any of the muddy
flatness that bronzing powders can have.
Don’t fear purple-pinks, either. Among
the pinks, corals and peaches of MAC’s
new gel blushes is a hazy lilac, which
brightens and looks unexpectedly cool;
Barber calls the effect of these bouncy,
buildable textures a ‘secret blush’ rather
than a major statement. We also love
butter-soft sticks (Nudestix makes some
of the best), which can be worn over
cheeks, lips and eyes for a healthy looking
effect. It’s a one-stop make-up that’s more
than the sum of its parts: you might need
nothing else bar mascara and a whisper of
mattifying powder between brows and on
either side of the nose. For less colour and
more shine, Ciaté’s glossy cheek stain
lights up tired faces. Oilier complexions
may do better with Maybelline’s oil-free
gel blush or Stila’s satiny stick, both of
which have more longevity than most.

What to buy

EMBRACE
THE SHINE
The worn-in finish of cream
blush is part of its charm, so
lean into the dew and pat on
more as needed throughout
the day. Or try the lipstick
trick: apply your blush, blot
your cheeks with a tissue to
remove the oils but retain the
blush pigments, and reapply.
