e’re big fans of
Obsidian’s work over
the years. The RPG
specialists have
brought usStar Wars:
Knights Of The Old Republic II,South
Park: Stick Of Truthand thePillars Of
Eternitygames, and it was recently
announced that they will be part of
Microsoft’s own stable of studios –
meaning some great Xbox-exclusive
RPGs in the future.
First though, there’s the small
matter ofThe Outer Worlds,an
intriguing title that was announced
recently at the Game Awards. A first-
person, sci-fi RPG,The Outer Worlds
sends you into the furthest reaches of
outer space and into the middle of a
deep conspiracy threatening the
colony you’ve just arrived in.
As with all good RPGs, your
behaviour will affect how the story
unfolds – which faction will you side
with, how will your choices impact
events? The beautifully realised
frontier colony looks like a fantastic
setting for your adventure,
imaginatively designed and suitably
‘space-age’ – with more than a little of
Fallout’s visual flair. This of course is to
be expected – Obsidian developed
Fallout: New Vegas, and the original
creators of theFalloutseries, Leonard
Boyarsky and Tim Cain, are also
working on the game.
But where theFalloutgames are
very much grounded, inThe Outer
Worldsyou actually have your own
spaceship and can travel around
various planets, moons and space
stations in the game’s solar system.
We’re getting aMass Effectvibe from
this one, in a good way of course.
Your ship will act as your hub, the
storage for your inventory and where
you manage your crew of NPC
companions. While you can only take
two companions with you at a time,
you can choose your mates based on
their skills which will be variously
useful in different situations. We’re
very excited for this one when it
releases later this year.Q

The Outer Worlds
has a really quite
original ‘Flaw’
system that will
work to flesh out
your character.
Should you, for
example, keep
getting set on
fire, you will be
presented with the
option to be afraid
of fire, and given
a debuff against
fire attacks as a
result. This will be
balanced out with
a perk elsewhere
though, thankfully,
and will result in
a unique and very
personal role-
playing experience.
