FIRST TEST OCULUS QUEST 2

Motion pinchers

Oculus has stuck with its 6DoF

tracking and it works as brilliantly

as before. There’s also support

for hand-tracking, which registers

button inputs by getting you

to pinch your fingers together.

Inevitably it isn’t quite as reliable

as using the controllers.

Queasy lover

Perhaps even more exciting is

the refresh rate of the fast-switch

LCD display, which will soon

enable 90Hz for smoother

gameplay, reduced lag and

hopefully less motion sickness.

We’re all for anything that shuts

out the wobblies.

Not a complete reinvention, but

our favourite VR headset is now

even better... and cheaper!

The original Quest felt almost too

good to be true. Its successor lacks

the same wow factor, but you can’t

argue with a better display and

processor for less money. Are there

more powerful headsets? Is motion sickness

still an issue? Yes to both, but superb tracking

and a total absence of wires make this the VR

package to get. @MattWTate

Q VR not alone

If you get a bit close to

breaching your Guardian’s

perimeter you’ll see a red

wall of warning, and if you

step through it entirely

you’ll see a real-time view

of the (boring) physical

world around you.

Q VR golden

With a Quest 2 on your

head you can be in your

own Star Wars movie,

but just setting it up is as

satisfying as pretty much

anything else it can do...

even if you do have to log

in to Facebook first. Urgh.

Q VR the world

There are recommended

room measurements for

apps that involve walking

around, and the headset

will warn you if your space

is too small. There are also

plenty of fine stationary

experiences, mind.

Q VR detective

Once you’ve turned it

on, found the right fit and

hooked it up to your Wi-Fi,

you’ll be asked to follow

on-screen instructions

to set up your Guardian,

a virtual outline to define

your playing space.

Setting up the Quest 2 really is part of the fun...
