Synoptic situation

An area of low pressure
centred over Ireland will
push a series of fronts and
associated showery rain across
northwestern Britain, while
southeastern parts stay drier
and brighter, with the odd
shower here and there. Into
tomorrow, a trailing front
across France and Iberia will
push northwards into southern
Britain, bringing further rain.

he calm weather this
weekend was a blessed
relief from the wind and
rain that has plagued
much of this month, and
maybe we could thank St Luke
and his feast for this peaceful
interlude on Sunday. This is when
folklore tells us that the weather
turns fine in what is called
St Luke’s Little Summer, and
perhaps there is something in this
legend because high pressure often
comes round at this time in
October, batting away storms and
bringing a decent spell of sunshine,
although this St Luke’s Day stayed
largely overcast.
The story behind the legend of
St Luke is that he didn’t enjoy the
reputation of other saints’ days, so
he laid on warm, calm and
hopefully sunny days in mid-autumn
to get the appreciation that he
deserved. There is a downside to
this folklore, though, because once
the spell of fine weather is over, it
then turns stormy for the rest of
the month, as another piece of
folklore warns: “A good October and
a good blast, to blow the hog acorn
and mast.”
And it looks like the UK is indeed
seeing a return to wild weather. The
high pressure this weekend is
slipping away and a contorted jet
stream is sweeping in Atlantic
depressions, spreading wind and
rain across the country this week.
But even though it’s turning wet, the
wind is no longer coming from cold
northern parts, and is now
streaming in from the south,
bringing milder air. And although
the weather is turning wet, there
will be some brighter spells to
break up the cloudy skies, a
pattern that looks likely to remain
next week as well.
Unfortunately this does not
bode too well for the tree leaves
changing into their autumn
colours, and they could get
battered in the wind. As the poet
Humbert Wolfe wrote in
Autumn (Resignation) (1926):
“Listen! the wind is rising/ and the
air is wild with leaves/ We have had
our summer evenings/ now for
October eves!”
