570 Volume and Surface Area

  1. What fraction of the volume of the prism is the volume of the pyramid?

  2. Repeat the Activity with a rectangular prism and a rectangular pyramid.
The prism and the pyramid should have equal heights and equal bases.
What fraction of the volume of the prism is the volume of the pyramid?

  3. MAKE A CONJECTURE Explain how you could find the volume of a pyramid
given a prism with the same base area and height. Justify your answer.

MOVIES Suppose the movie theater also offers shaved ice in a cylinder
and in a cone. The cylinder and the cone have equal heights and equal
base areas. Make a model of each container.

Draw each net onto card stock. Cut out each and tape together.
For the cone, cut out the radius of the larger circle and overlap
until the cone is formed. The cylinder and cone will be open.

Fill the cone with rice. Pour the rice from the cone into the
cylinder and repeat until the cylinder is full.

the Results

  1. Compare the bases and heights of the cylinder and cone.

  2. How many cones of rice did it take to fill the cylinder?

  3. What fraction of the volume of the cylinder is the volume of the cone?

  4. MAKE A CONJECTURE If the cylinder of shaved ice has a volume of 27 ounces,
what is the volume of the cone of shaved ice? Justify your answer.
