Projects



  1. Locate and read different descriptions of the Punnett
    Square on the Internet. Find four different scenarios that
    can be represented using a Punnett Square. Print these
    four scenarios and then explain how the Punnett Square
    represents them.

  2. Get ConnectED Create sample genes for pet traits. Go to
    connectED.mcgraw-hill.com/ to get the recording sheet
    for the information you will create. Complete the table for
    4 different pets and the possible characteristics of each pet.
    Write 1–2 paragraphs describing how the Punnett Square
    is used in genetics and how math is involved with the Punnett Square.

  3. Create a poster board containing information about the data you have
    gathered about genetics and pet traits. Include a table displaying your data.


Making the Connection
Use the information collected about genetics as needed to help in
these investigations.

Language Arts
Research the theories of genetics. Write an essay that explains how genes
work and what it means for a trait to be dominant or recessive.

Science
Explain how a Punnett Square can be used to determine the probability of
inheriting certain features from parents.

Health
Select a health condition or disease and research how genetics may play
a part in the disease. Write 1–2 paragraphs explaining how genetics may
infl uence someone’s risk of getting the disease and steps that can be taken
to reduce the risk factors.

    to share your completed pet traits
    table with the class.

  • Instead of a poster board, you can
    create a PowerPoint® presentation
    to display and share the
    information from your project.
